Most Vet Techs, if they make $15 an hour, that is about $30,000 a year which is more likely. One of the main reasons why vet tech salaries are so low is that there is a lot of turnover in this profession. One of the main reasons is lack of opportunities for advancement. In private veterinary practice the room for advancement is very limited. You often have to leave private practice and get a government job related to research if you want advancement. But most vet techs simply get burned out and switch careers that are better paying or have better benefits.
