How many non-governmental organizations exist in China today?
China recognizes the role that environmental degradation plays its ability to industrialize and develop. Some reports show that environmental problems cost China as much as 10% of its annual GDP. To capitalize on its human resources and get help protecting the environment, China passed a law allowing NGOs to officially register and operate in 1994. Today, there are over 2,000 environmental NGOs, and thousands of student initiatives, promoting environmental awareness in China.
