There are only a few true breeds.Wolf , Highena , ect. Everything else is a mix breed. The AKC is a business that is why they dont see some other kennals dog as a pure breed. If you take two different breed dogs that are ACK reg. and make puppies you can call it a pure breed and give it a breed name. Every dog( even the mutt in the back yard that has 10 different breeds in it) is a pure breed dog , it just has not been givin a name. That is how we have pit bulls which is a terrier MIX dog and not a ACK reg. pure breed. So you can see that every dog in its own rights is a pure breed.
There are over 150 recognized by AKC, plus many foundation breeds not yet recognized for show. In addition there are many localized breeds around the world that are not widely known outside their region. http://www.akc.org/breeds/index.cfm?nav_… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dog… There are also a lot of so called hybrid dogs or designer dogs simply bred to make money from an uneducated public.
That depends on who you ask. The American Kennel Club recognizes just over 150 breeds. The ANKC (Australian National Kennel Council) recognizes closer to 200 breeds. The United Kennel Club (in the UK) recognizes around 300 different breeds. And then there’s the “designer breeds” which are controlled mix-bred dogs. These are not recognized by the big dog registries, but many have their own registries to attempt to create a breed standard.
