How long does it take to learn to play?
It must be pointed out that age and predisposition count for a lot in learning to play golf; it obviously helps to be young and athletic, but one can still learn at a more advanced age. The performance of a sixty year-old player will naturally differ from that of a twenty year-old sportsperson, but the pleasure of having a game with friends will not. In order to learn in the first place, at least 10 – 20 weekly lessons are necessary, alternating theory with practice. This will provide a basic understanding of the movement ( the swing ) and will then allow you to put it into practice. It is important to begin with a good teacher as many of the defects acquired by beginners are difficult to eliminate. Never accept the advice of well-meaning friends although their intentions are undoubtedly good: an amateur is not in a position to correctly evaluate style of play, let alone correct it.
