How is United Way involved?
2-1-1 was first launched by United Way of Metro Atlanta in 1997 and now reaches into 30 states. It currently reaches over 99 million people (over 33% of US population), but millions still need to be connected. UWA has declared February 11 as National 2-1-1 Day since this initiative benefits individuals in need, which mirrors the mission of the 1,400 United Ways nationwide to better people’s lives. What about Michigan? The W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan and Michigan Association of United Ways are sponsors of Michigan’s 2-1-1 Collaborative. 2-1-1 currently serves 14% of Michigan’s population with service available in Calhoun, Kent, Kalamazoo, Ottawa and Jackson counties. Plans are underway for 75% of Michigan’s population to have this service by 2006 and 100% by 2007, subject to sustainable funding. More information about 2-1-1 is available on the Michigan Association of United Ways’ website: www.uwmich.
The JCPenney Afterschool Fund, which was established by JCPenney in 2001, is a charitable organization committed to providing children in need with access to life-enriching afterschool programs that foster their academic, physical and social development. Through partnerships with the YMCA of the USA, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, National 4-H and United Way of America, the JCPenney Afterschool Fund helps prepare children to reach their full potential by providing them with essential after school opportunities. 2) Who can apply for these funds? JCPenney Afterschool Fund grants are currently distributed through local YMCAs, Boys & Girls Clubs, 4-H Clubs and other United Way-funded after school programs in 17 select metro markets. The grants cover the cost of after school program access for children who would not otherwise have the financial means to participate. 3) Could you briefly tell us about some of the events that are held?
