How is an AMR system installed?
The data-collection field unit is securely mounted next to or near a gas or electric meter and is connected to the meter’s workings by a minimally intrusive line. It can be powered by either an electrical main, standard line, battery or solar unit. The modem connects either to a dedicated telephone line (offering dial-in/dial-out support) or a shared line (typically offering only dial-in support) or adapted for wireless communications (cellular telephone or pager). Installation does not affect incoming gas and electrical lines or interfere with the metering equipment, and customers experience no interruption of service.
