How does the Y2K problem affect PCs?
This problem really has two parts. The system date is stored on the hardware and is controlled by the BIOS (Basic Input Output System). If the BIOS is not Y2K compliant, it will register the new century as 1900. The second part is the operating system (OS). If a Windows operating system, depending on product and version, receives a date of 1900 it will assume the date is 1980. For most applications, either of these problems will not cripple the system. However, errors will occur as date sensitive applications will become unreliable.
