How does the fossil record support evolution?

It fits perfectly into the bigger picture, it adds up with the similarities found from DNA comparison and geographical distribution of organisms. However, the importance of the fossil record is in my opinion overrated. Even though there are much more fossils than creationists want to acknowledge, and even though there are no important ‘missing links’, evolution would be considered proven without a single fossil. DNA comparison is compelling enough by itself, all the other pieces of additional evidence just strenghten it.
