How does digital phone service work?
Digital phone service securely transmits phone calls over the Internet. With digital phone service, when you pick up your regular telephone and dial a phone number, a data connection is made with the called number. Your spoken words are translated into data packets. These data packets are transmitted over data networks and reconverted to words at the other end.
Digital is the process of breaking up voice/audio into packets of data, compressing the data, transmitting that data over an IP network (e.g. the internet), and reassembling those data at the receiving end, so that two people can communicate using voice/audio. Digital services convert your voice into a digital signal that travels over the Internet. If you are calling a regular phone number, the signal is converted to a regular telephone signal before it reaches the destination. Digital can allow you to make a call directly from a computer, a special Digital phone, or a traditional phone connected to a special adapter.
The Digital Phone Service uses an Analog Telephone Adaptor (ATA), connected to your phone, to convert your voice signal into a digital signal. This digital signal is transferred through the Internet via your modem to your party. If they are serviced by a traditional phone company, the signal will convert to analog when it is “switches” over to the phone company’s lines. If they are also using a Digital Phone Service, their adapter will convert it to an analog signal.
