How does a blood bank function?

Perhaps I can give you a practical example. My wife Dorothy and I are long-time blood donors. We go to the donation centre every three months. It’s just down the round from us, but it’s quite difficult to find as the entrance is hidden by some bushes. In fact, for the benefit of strangers in the area and as a warning, it has a sign on the roadside saying: ‘congealed entrance’ There, we see the friendly nurses. They take our blood – just a pint – anymore and I would faint flat on the floor. This blood then goes off to the blood bank where it is stored until it is required in a hospital for an operation or emergency procedure. It’s a marvelous system and saved my life once. After a particularily nasty accident with a zip (shades of Something about Mary) I received blood from my neighbour, Lord Highton Smyth of Dungle Manor. I now have aristocratic blood flooding through my veins. Hope this helps.
