Design and Controls A backhoe, also known as a back actor, is a piece of equipment that is primarily used for digging into the ground and removing large amounts of dirt, gravel or sand. Back hoes consist of a long arm with a squared, scooping appendage known as the bucket on the end of it. The backhoe is designed a lot like a human arm: three joints with something to grab with on the end. The upper arm portion would be known as the boom, while the forearm is referred to as the stick.The backhoe is usually attached to a tractor on the back with a complementing tool known as a loader on the front.
