How Do You Use Internet Material Without Violating Copyright Laws?
Although most material on the Internet is available to the public, it is still protected by copyright laws. Before using text, an image or any other material found on the Internet, you must obtain permission from its owner. E-mail the owner or creator of the material you want to use, be it text, image or what have you, and ask permission to use it. Be sure to state clearly how you intend to use the material and for what purpose. Contact the site or newsgroup administrator if the e-mail address of the owner is not available on the Web page, newsgroup or other online resource that hosts the material. Although this person may not own the material, he or she may be able to get you in touch with the person who does. Negotiate the use of the material with its owner, and retain a copy of the owner’s e-mail or other correspondence granting you permission.
