You can use gel stain over a previously stained surface to save the time and still achieve the look that you want. Sand the surface to prepare it for the new coat of stain. When you use gel stain, you don’t have to completely remove the sealant and the existing stain. However, removing as much as possible will help you obtain an even coat of stain in the color you desire. Choose a gel stain that’s close to or darker than the color of the existing stain. It’s impossible to stain an item and make it lighter. However, staining it the same color or darker is possible because the new stain covers the old stain without any bleed-through from the old stain. Apply the gel stain liberally to the surface.
