It doesn’t need to be expensive; however, it lasts a long time, so you should spend extra money for one that’s sturdy. Sharpen your tool. A dull scratch awl is almost impossible to use. If it needs to be sharpened, use a metal file to create a sharp point. Draw the file down the shaft to the point of the awl while slowly turning the awl.
