How Do You Sharpen Bolt Cutters Using Tools?

Bolt cutters are large versions of wire cutters. Longer handles and stronger jaws allow the bolt cutters to cut through reinforced steel locks, bolts and metal rods. Like all cutting tools, the edges eventually need sharpening. There are tools for the job. Use round metal-mill files and some spray-on solvent to get the job done and hone the cutter’s jaws back to their proper cutting edge. Open the bolt cutter jaws. Spray the edges with the solvent and allow it to soak in and remove any rust or accumulated corrosion. Wipe away the fluid and debris. Place the round file into the bottom of the jaws’ “V”. Slide the file across the edge of one side of the jaws, making sure to go in one direction only. Use a diagonal motion to scrape it across the full edge of the jaw. Pass the file along the edge two to three dozen times to restore the edge to its original quality. Do not over sharpen as this will compromise the metal jaw’s integrity. Repeat Step 2 on the opposite jaw. Wipe away any excess
