You might notice that the wheel turns farther in one direction than the other. Or you may realize the boat turns tighter in one direction, but you can justify that tight turn by the way the propeller swings. If the problem is not with the steering system gear box, then it’s time to pull and replace the steering shaft. Remove the steering wheel by using the adjustable wrench to remove the central nut. Use the steering wheel puller or a gear puller of the appropriate size to remove the steering wheel from the shaft. Remove the four bolts around the steering-column retaining collar. These bolts are located under or behind the steering console. When you remount the steering column, return each bolt to the hole from which it was removed.
