How do you remove old ceramic tile?

Answer Thank you for your question Janet, You can go over old tile with some preparation no problem. As with any change in flooring the first question I need to know is finish height at critical areas. In particular doorways, under stoves/refridg ect. In your case you need to be careful for “trip hazzards” going from one room to another and adjustments need to be implimented to insure some degree of safety. When you add a layer of tile over another you can easily increase the height of the floor a half inch. That may not seem like much but it can create a whole host of problems. Quite a lot of early installs used a mosaic tile which are fairly thin in design and good candidates for tile over tile installs. The surface of the old tile will need to be roughed up with sandpaper, best when a belt sander is used to really get after the surface and score the old glaze so that the new adhesive can bite into the top to help secure new tile. Check for any loose or “hollow sounding” tiles, then
