SARS, which stands for severe acute respiratory syndrome, is a sometimes deadly viral infection caused by the SARS coronavirus. A SARS infection is very similar to a flu but with more severe consequences. The first global outbreak occurred in 2003 with nearly 800 fatalities. The fatality rate is approximately 10 percent.
