Dogs, raccoons and other animals love to roam the outdoors at night and get into vulnerable garbage cans. Most of these troublemakers can smell garbage from a great distance, and they can be extremely persistent when it comes to getting into your trash. But with a couple of simple safeguards, you can virtually eliminate these pests’ chances of tearing into your garbage and leaving a big mess for you to clean up. Find some short bungee cords to tightly fasten your garbage can lids to the cans themselves. Cords that are about one foot in length and that have hooks on both ends will work for most garbage can sizes. These can be purchased at most hardware stores. When you take out your next bag of garbage, put the lid on the trash can and fasten it in place with two bungee cords.
