Many packages of shingles contain warnings that you should avoid installing shingles in the winter. These warnings exist because the sticky tabs on shingles are only activated when the weather is warm. If you do want to shingle your roof in the wintertime, though, there is a way around this issue–using roofing cement. Apply a small amount of roofing cement from the caulk tube to the underside of the shingle tab. Position the shingle in the correct spot on the roof (using chalk lines for accurate placement, if necessary), and press down so that the shingle will adhere to the roof. Nail the shingle down using the correct number of nails and nail placement as specified on the shingle package. Many shingles have nailing lines as guides, and others merely specify the appropriate number of nails.
