The tie rods on your vehicle are the mechanical linkages that take the input from the steering wheel and translate it into the left or right motion of the front wheels. Loose or defective tie rods can cause sloppy steering and uneven tire wear. Fortunately tie rod replacement is within the abilities of most amateur mechanics. Preparation Step 1 Disconnect the ground cable from the negative battery terminal, by loosening the retaining clamp and sliding the clamp off the negative battery post. Step 2 Block the rear wheels. Step 3 Lift the front of the vehicle with a floor jack and support with jack stands. Step 4 Locate the tie rod you wish to replace.
