How Do You Check A Fuel Sending Unit?
The fuel-sending unit assembly inside the fuel tank of your car is equipped with a float attached to a variable resistor. The amount of gasoline in the tank causes the float to go up or down, varying the voltage going to the fuel gauge on your instrument panel. These changes in electrical current let you know when a stop to the next gas station is necessary, unless the resistance unit breaks, the float leaks or the assembly’s ground connection breaks. To know the cause of the problem, follow these steps and decide whether a repair or replacement is necessary on your particular vehicle model. Loosen the fuel filler cap. Relieve the fuel system pressure on your vehicle. Consult your car owner’s manual or vehicle service manual for the recommended procedure for your particular car make and model.
