How do I fix my Acer Extensa 5420 screen blackout?

I had to help a friend of mine to reload her ACER. The only way I could get past the black screen was to put her recovery disc in and reload her system. Had to load the disc in the few minutes when the system is trying to boot, then when I turned it back on, it went into the recovery; but lost all the prior programs she had. Then we backed up her disc after we had it running again.
