How do I Extend My Laptop Battery Life?

The answer seems to be that there are no tried and true methods of extending the life of laptop batteries. After all someone has to keep the manufacturers in business. Some schools of thought on lifetime of batteries say keep them always charged or plugged into a charger.

Back in the olden days, the charge level of batteries (and life) would decrease if you did not completely discharge them occasionally. but the newer batteries seem to not obey that rule. Such as batterieschargeur.fr

I keep my laptop plugged in all the time and have had at least 3 years of life in each of them.

But of course you have entered “how to extend battery life” in google???

The question of extending laptop battery life is one of the most vexing concerns of many of those who take advantage of mobile computing. A laptop battery can be a very expensive component to replace, with most costing at least $100 US Dollars (USD) and some costing considerably more than that. Therefore, it is to the computer owner’s advantage to follow a few simple steps to extend battery life. Of primary importance is to know the type of battery you have. For example, lithium ion batteries work differently than NiCD or NiMH batteries. The latter two should be fully discharged to avoid a memory effect, which will work to deplete laptop battery life. The lithium ion battery should never be fully discharged. Whenever possible, avoid needless recharge cycles. Any rechargeable battery has only so many of these. Discharging a battery for a few minutes, then plugging it in could prematurely cause laptop battery life to decrease dramatically. Rather, if you do not need the battery and it is

The best you can do is to take the battery off every time it’s fully charged and you are in a place where you can keep the laptop plugged to the wall. Batteries life is determined in Cycles. 1 Cycle equal 1 discharge + 1 charge. Charging you battery when it’s half empty won’t damage the battery itself but will make you run thru cycles twice faster, thus, it will kill your battery twice faster. Never, never, keep the laptop plugged in with the battery in fully charged for a long period of time….. This is the mistake most people make, it prematurely kills the battery. Also, never keep the battery empty for a long period of time like a week or so. Lithium ion batteries don’t like to be left discharged for a long period of time.

Leaving the laptop plugged in all the time shouldn’t affect the battery life very much (although leaving it run down to half and then plugging it in probably wouldn’t good for it). There’s no way to increase battery life on that kind of battery, so your only option is to buy yourself a new battery.

It doesn’t matter if you leave it plugged in all day, bcoz once the battery is charged the laptop runs on AC power. It might be that you messed up with some power configuration. incase you are using windows go to desktop properties, screensaver tab, power option and set the time for turn off monitor and standby. Also decreasing the display brightness would result in increased battery life.
