How do I determine the numbers, types & locations of fire fighting equipment required in premises?
Typically for the class “A” fire risk (Such as wood, paper or textiles) single water based extinguishers for approximately every 200m² of floor space; with a minimum of two extinguishers per floor is sufficient. However, where a fire risk is not confined to a particular location (e.g. class “A” fires), the fire extinguisher should be positioned on escape routes, close to the exit from the room or floor or the final exit from the building. Where the risk is quite specific, e.g. (flammable liquids) the appropriate fire extinguisher should be located near to the potential hazard so that it can be used safely. Such extinguishers should be placed on a dedicated stand or hung on a wall at a convenient height (1m for large extinguishers; 1.5m for smaller ones). The aim of this determination is; that no one should need to travel more than 30m to reach a fire extinguisher. More information is available via BS 5306-8, Fire Extinguisher selection & Installation guidance.
