How do I analyse music?

One suggestion: get hold of a good CD of the piece you want to learn, and a good book that discusses it. Then read and listen until you understand. One that I found to be very good is David Hurwitz: “Exploring Haydn: A Listener’s Guide to Music’s Boldest Innovator.” This one comes with two Naxos CDs containing the pieces discussed, so you don’t have to invest a small fortune in buying Haydn’s music. You’ll have to (or at least I had to) read the description in the book and listen to each piece several times until you can hear what the author is talking about. This book will not only teach you a lot about music–as Haydn was one of the truly great innovators and composers–but will increase your appreciation for Haydn and for classical music in general.

Hard to answer this because I don’t really know what level of analysis you’re doing. I’d say two very important elements are required though, the sheet music or transcription of the music and a recording or ability to play the music accurately so you can hear it. Then you can dissect the various elements: Rhythm, Harmony, Melody, Structure, Development, Themes, Instrumental Forces, etc.
