How did Gregor Mendel die?
Mendel died on January 6, 1884, at age 61, in Brünn, Austria-Hungary (now Brno, Czech Republic), from chronic nephritis. Czech composer Leoš Janáček played the organ at his funeral. After his death, the following abbot burned all papers in Mendel’s collection. Nephritis is inflammation of the kidney. The word comes from the Greek nephro- meaning “of the kidney” and -itis meaning “inflammation”. Nephritis is often caused by infections, toxins, and auto-immune diseases.
