Jerome Slater’s Viewpoints article states that the Israeli settlers are a more central problem to peace than Hamas. I wonder if this was written prior to Hamas breaking its truce with Israel. The settlers have been evicted by Israel from unacceptable settlements before and presumably would be again should a peace settlement require this. Slater’s viewpoints historically have not been objective and he appears to be an apologist for both Hezbollah and Hamas, terrorist organizations with the stated objective of the destruction of Israel. I quote Michael Walzer, professor emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, in 2007 on Slater’s comments on the Lebanon war: “American foreign policy is determined by American interests and American sympathies, and if the Palestinians looked as if they wanted a state alongside Israel, and nothing more that that, it would be in our interest to help create such a state, and the project would enlist our sympathies.
