How can NGOs participate?

Accredited NGOs can participate directly in the Commission on Human Rights by making written statements, sent in advance to its secretariat, and oral statements addressing the Commission under the relevant items of its agenda. Yet, most NGO work consists of preparatory work, advocacy, information and substantive input prior and in parallel to the sessions, through direct contacts with member States, organisation of thematic panels, production of alternative information and follow-up of negotiations at the international and national levels. In that process, NGOs operate both individually and as organised groups. Detailed information for NGOs that wish to participate to the 62nd session is available on the OHCHR website, this link includes guidelines for participants, maps, etc. A new information sharing platform has been set up for NGOs: download information in [English – French – Spanish]. The deadline for application has been extended to 28 February.

Written Statements NGOs will be permitted to participate in the session by providing written statements relating to the two thematic issues. For guidelines relating to these statements, please visit the NGO ECOSOC website. NGOs that are interested in providing a statement may do so no later than 15 January 2005. Please keep in mind that there is much processing that needs to be done to prepare these statements as official United Nations documents before the Commission begins. Kindly submit these statements directly to Ms. Vivian Pliner-Josephs in the Secretariat (Room S-2950E). Oral intervention In addition to the high-level events, NGOs will, time permitting, provide inputs into the session by presenting an oral intervention during all sessions. NGOs will be required to request time for their intervention in advance of the session, and to complete a form which lists the name of the speaker, organization(s)/caucus, topic to be addressed and endorsing groups. NGOs will also be required
