How bad is caffine during pregnancy?
Caffeine isn’t as bad as smoking or alcohol during pregnancy. The problem that it poses is a higher chance of miscarriage. Most OB/GYNs will advise you to cut down on your caffeine intake, although a very prudent few will tell you to cut it out all together. My OB told me that two 8 oz cups of coffee a day are acceptable. I’m more of a soft drink person, though, and they have a significantly less amount of caffeine than coffee. Your girlfriend will be fine unless she starts slacking off and drinking more caffeine than recommended.
I tried to be the “good mom to be” and quit my caffeine addiction cold turkey with my first kid. It was a pretty bad addiction having worked in Seattle WA (commuting from the east coast every week) for a year! Anyway, that was not a great method, turns out. It put my body under a lot of stress with the sudden withdrawals and I just couldn’t hack it. 300 milligrams, which other people have mentioned, seems to be the upper limit of what most physicians recommend. That’s one pretty strong 8 ounce cup of coffee (think Starbucks bold), and coke doesn’t have nearly that much caffeine in it.
it’s fine. early in pregnancy a lot of caffine is bad because it increases your chances of miscarriage. one cup of coffee or the a few glasses/cans of soda a day won’t hurt the baby. I asked my old doctor (previous two pregnancies) about it because I was craving dr. pepper everyday and drank a 44 oz. fountain soda a day she said have as much as you want it won’t do a thing. both of my girls are fine. With this pregnancy I have a new dr. and she told me to stay away from it or limit my self to 2 cups of coffee of less a day until the second trimester because I have had 3 previous miscarriages (NOT caused by caffine) and she said it could cause issues until I get past 12 weeks.
