How are the parks near the Swan River managed?
The majority of parks and recreation reserves around the Swan and Canning rivers are either crown land vested with a management authority (for example a local government, Department Of Environment and Conservation or WA Planning Commission) or held as freehold by local government for parks and recreation. Those organisations have overall responsibility for park management. Parks and recreation reserves near the Swan River have recently been included in the new Swan Canning Riverpark. The Riverpark was created through the new Swan and Canning Rivers Management Act (2006). The Riverpark includes the waterways and adjacent crown land reserves of the Swan, Canning, Helena and Southern rivers. No private property is included in the Riverpark. The legislation makes the Trust responsible for the waterways and establishes joint shoreline management arrangements.
