How are Saltillo Tiles made?
The manufacturing process of Saltillo tiles is little different than ceramic tiles. The basic ingredient of Saltillo tiles is natural clay. The tiles are shaped from cured clay either by pressing them with wooden frames or by skilled artisan that hand-carving them. The Saltillo tiles are then sun-dried and baked in a kiln. The color of the final product usually depends on the position of the tile in the kiln while being baked. The shades range from pale yellows to rich terracotta oranges. While many prefer the natural raw look of the tiles, others actually prefer the more refined look of the tiles. This is achieved with a little more processing that involves cleaning the tiles, glazing them and sealing them to increase longevity. The final products are available in quite an impressive array of shapes, colors and sizes to suit your design needs.
