• Wal-Mart has abandoned millions of square feet of retail space, largely to build larger Superstores in nearby areas. The property is often difficult to sublet because of non-compete clauses Wal-Mart puts in its agreements. One need only remember the old Jamesway store which was only recently occupied by Fecera’s Furniture. That building sat empty for years, consider what things will look like if Rite Aid, Redners and ShurFine are forced out of business by Wal-Mart. • In response to an attempt by its employees to unionize, Wal-Mart shut down an entire store in Quebec, Canada, putting more than 200 people out of work.
