Does the type of bean matter?
A full-bodied darker bean does not necessarily contain more caffeine. In fact arabica beans which are used by Caddies in all our fine gourmet coffee actually contain less caffeine (about half) than the cheaper robusta variety often used in cheaper roast, ground and instant coffees. A portion of the caffeine content is also lost in the roasting process. This means that a darker bean which produces a rich cup of coffee usually contains less caffeine than a weaker cup. The coffee making style also affects the amount of caffeine in your cup. An espresso releases more caffeine than a plunger. It depends on the amount of time the coffee is exposed to hot water. Only a small portion of caffeine is released into the coffee when it is brewed in an espresso, which takes around 25 seconds to brew. In a plunger however, which takes around 3minutes, more caffeine in released into your coffee. It is important to note here that boiling coffee gives it a harsh, bitter taste.
