Does taking vitamin/mineral supplements actually help?
If you take a supplement you don’t need, you will merely develop expensive urine. But there are many health disorders which are either caused by certain nutrient deficiencies, or themselves actually cause nutrient deficiencies as a result of the disease process. Further, people under severe stress, or who have a heavy workload, or athletes in training & competition generally have a higher need for micronutrients than other people. And of course, there is a good argument for the idea that our foods may be quite deficient in micronutrients, especially minerals. Modern agricultural methods gradually deplete soils of minerals. I have seen figures showing mineral content of soils to have dropped to half of the levels in the mid 1900s and trace element levels to have reduced by five to ten fold. For all the above reasons, supplements not only help, but they are often essential for people living in the modern world.
