Do sugar gliders make good pets?
Sugar gliders are great pets. They adapt very well to captivity and they are endearing little creatures. They are small, like a hamster, but much smarter. They have sassy attitudes and can often be found chattering away at friends and strangers who peep in on them while they nap during the day. Of course, whether or not they make good pets depends upon who you ask. While some people believe that sugar gliders should not be kept in captivity, most people generally enjoy these tiny pocket pets because they tend to bond to their owners at an early age. They are adorable, gregarious, and intelligent. And it is fun to carry a sugar glider around in one’s bonding pouch during the day. Nevertheless, potential owners must recognize the fact that sugar gliders seek companionship, and can die if kept captive and alone.
Yes, Sugar Gliders are uniquely suited to captivity. They are very social, and will totally bond to the person who gives them good care and treats them well. Despite this loving nature, Sugar Gliders are not for small children who cannot control themselves and want to squeeze them too tight, or treat them too rough. However, they are wonderful pets for older children, adults, the disabled, and the elderly. In fact, anyone committed to the daily care of a glider after knowing the time investment and costs can make an excellent owner for these wonderful pocket pets.
Gliders live many years (fifteen or even more in some cases) and owning a glider is a big responsibility… a glider is not the right pet for you if you cannot commit to caring for one for that amount of time. Gliders are energetic and inquisitive, and have loads of attitude; they are not always the cuddly little balls of fur you might want them to be. Generally, even the tamest of gliders will want to play and be active at night and sleep near you and cuddle with you during the day when they are the most tired. It can take a tremendous effort to get a glider to trust you or consider you a friend. If you are not capable of making such an effort, or are not capable of spending a good amount of time each day maintaining this relationship, then a glider is probably not a good match for you.
