Do some students “get stuck” between the two languages?
Absolutely. The danger for many young L2 learners is incomplete language development in both languages, or what may be thought of as impoverished bilingualism. Many of these children struggle at school, especially in grades 4 to 6 where there is a greater emphasis on content learning, and language acquisition is assumed. They tend to fall farther and farther behind. They are often found in special education classes, nonacademic programs. They tend to experience failure and become dropout statistics.
