Do PIs carry badges?
Yes, most do carry badges for identification along with their PI licenses issued by SLED. Many PIs are former law enforcement attuned to carrying badges. Badges are neither specifically lawfully authorized or unauthorized, although PIs have generally carried badges back to at least the early Pinkerton days in the mid 1800s. Importantly, PI badges generally display to persons having a need-to-know that the Investigator is engaged in official business authorized by South Carolina and federal laws, is licensed and overseen by SLED, elicits cooperation, opens doors, assists in obtaining information and records, etc.
