Do Incinerators create waste?
The main residue from EfW incineration is bottom ash, which represents 30% by weight of the original waste but only 10% by volume (ie. needs only 10% of the original landfill space). This bottom ash is an inactive material and is widely used in European countries in road building and construction. In the UK some of the current bottom ash arisings are used in the manufacture of masonry blocks and in road construction by local authority highway departments. This type of beneficial use is set to increase. Fly ash arises from the particulate removal during the gas cleaning process. It consists of fine particulates from the gas stream and represents about 4% by weight of the input waste. This ash is treated and landfilled in specially engineered and licensed landfill sites. Does EfW suppress recycling? Experience in a number of other European countries shows that EfW incineration underpins schemes with high recycling rates. EfW gives the opportunity to recover value (energy) from waste whic
