carpet or hard wood floor?”
If you have pets, carpets pick up odors, germs and bacteria. I had a dog who thought it was like the grass outside. When you have guests over oftentimes they baptize the carpet with their drinks and food crumbs become embedded in the fibers. I have also read that new carpeting is treated with chemicals which are quite toxic to pets and small children. My family and I moved into a home where the owner was a cigar smoker. As soon as we opened the door we were hit in the face with a major cigar odor breeze. Phew! Needless to say all the carpeting was pulled out and replaced with Mexican tile. It doesn’t wear as well as hardwood and requires more cleaning.
I prefer carpet to hardwood floors for the following reasons: It’s just more comfortable to walk on I’d much rather vacuum than sweep Along that lines – maintenance is cheaper and easier If I drop something, it’s less likely to break I had an apartment with hardwood floors, and in our current house, just about the entire ground level is hardwood floors. We immediately put a nice, thick carpet in the master bedroom. We will eventually put it in the family room, and just leave the walkways as hardwood. My TV area in the basement is on a raised partition of hardwood (so all of the cables can be routed under the floor via access panels), but the rest of the basement is a berber carpet.
