Can’t a union guarantee job security, wage increases or benefit improvements?
No. Union organizers are the “sales people” of a union and, therefore, may promise almost anything to get employees to vote for union representation and to pay union dues. Everything that employees currently have can be the subject of negotiations. Remember, while the law does mandate an obligation to bargain in “good faith” on both parties, the union and the Company, “such obligation does not compel either party to agree to a proposal or require the making of a concession (National Labor Relations Act).
