On the surface the religious symbols used in the story “Araby” may seem outdated and not relevant to the Western world in which I currently live. But digging deeper within the story and in my own life, I realize that it strikes several chords in me. I have chosen three religious examples from the story to which I can personally relate – my experience at my old religious school, my religious state over the years, and the confusion over my priorities. To begin, back home my old religious school was, to put it simply, very strict. I had to be on my best behavior at all times or else some severe punishment was imminent. Typically my days used to go by with me staring at the clock. I always wanted to know when I would be set free. A similar feeling can be observed in the narrator of “Araby” using the word “free” in describing the release of the children from the Christian Brothers School.
