Many of the students will want to submit and present the data they collected for their research project in a public forum as a science fair project or in Science Olympiad, even if their mentors/principal investigators are not planning to publish. This use of patient information meets the definition of research. In anticipation of their student using their research project in this manner, mentors are required to submit the research project to the IRB for review and approval to assure procedures are in place to protect the possibility of inadvertent disclosure that could place the subject at risk. The mentor needs to notify the IRB in writing of this use of the study and the addition of their summer student, prior to the student’s participation. The student would be required to have the necessary education and oversight to ensure privacy of our patients and confidentiality of data.
