Before the first debate between Gore and Bush, daily tracking polls had Gore about five points ahead, but within the margin of error — a statistical dead heat. Most pundits and the snap polls of debate viewers said Gore won. But the movement in the subsequent tracking polls was in Bush’s favor, not Gore’s. Before the second debate, Bush had climbed to a five-point lead, still a statistical dead heat, but a significant improvement for him of more than twice the margin of error. After the second debate, the snap polls and most pundits said Bush won. Imagine how the tracking polls will move in the days to come. The presidential election is indeed a neck-and-neck horse race.
