Can ice dams form?

During the winter, conventional raingutters and downspouts can plug up from the frozen water and cause ice dams that back water under the shingles and leak into the ceiling. The real cause of ice dams is insufficient attic insulation that causes the snow to melt in the first place. If the ambient temperature is below freezing and the snow melts due to the warm roof, the resulting water will re-freeze on the cold rain gutter and create an ice blockage. The ice blockage builds up quickly in the conventional gutter and backs up onto the shingles easily. If the ambient temperature is above freezing, the snow will melt but the water will not re-freeze on the cold rain gutter as it will be above the freezing temperature as well. The ice dam can also form on the shingles near the fascia because the roof temperatures can be colder there as air circulation into the attic enters the vents. In any event, the RainbreakerZ is 6 to 7 inches below the shingle level, does not hold up water like a gutt
