Most dentists recommend that children should see the dentist as soon as when they have their first teeth. Many school age children suffer from serious dental problems because their dental health was neglected as preschoolers. So, I would say that your child is old enough to visit the dentist. They should have regular checkup and cleanings as soon as they have teeth. I would also warn you to be careful. There are several children’s practices across the country who do not allow parents to accompany children into the exam. They also will present you with a list of ways they want to possibly restrain your child during procedures. Some of the practices go by the name “Smiles” or something like that. There have been several news shows about these practices, because some children have been severely injured or traumatized by the procedures and the restraints. It is ILLEGAL, by federal laws to restrain any adults without good reason. It is also not legal for children, and very dangerous!
