Yes – The Government decided that the National scheme travel cards would be issued in smartcard format and contain a microchip which can be read by smart readers fitted to some buses. The microchip contains the 13 digit reference number also printed on the front of the card and details of the concessions that your card entitles you to, but no personal information.
