With the acquisitions of LeBron James and Chris Bosh, the Miami Heat are already considered the early favorites to be one of the two teams vying for the championship in 2011. While there is no denying the talent of these group of players, how do they match up against some of the greatest trios of all time? Here is a short list of some of the greatest NBA trios of all-time.

    Bill Russell-Bob Cousy-John Havilcek:

The Celtics teams dominated the league during the late 1950’s and early 1960’s winning an astounding eleven titles in the span of thirteen years. This group of players combined to win six of those championships. Bill Russell was the defensive stalwart; Cousy was the floor general and Havilcek was a versatile forward who played well on both ends of the floor.

    Magic Johnson-Kareem Abdul-Jabbar- James Worthy

This trio was probably one of the flashiest of trios the league has ever seen. Their potent offense was labeled as “Showtime” because with Magic Johnson leading the break, that is exactly what fans were treated to; a show. With James Worth at the small forward and Kareem in the middle, this group led the Los Angeles Lakers to three of the five championship franchise won during the 1980’s.

    Larry Bird-Robert Parish-Kevin McHale:

This frontcourt is considered the greatest of all time by many. This team was the East Coast version of the Lakers as they led the Celtics to the Finals five times, capturing three titles in the process. No one could shoot the ball better than Larry Bird during his career and many teams found themselves overly matched when playing against Boston’s frontcourt. All three players have gone to the Hall of Fame.

    Shaquille O‘Neal-Kobe Bryant-Derrick Fisher

These three players helped return the Lakers back to glory during their eight years together. With O’Neal dominating the paint along with Bryant and Fisher supplying the scoring from the outside, the Lakers won three consecutive titles from 2000-2002 and complied an impressive 12-3 Finals record mark over that time span.

    Michael Jordan-Scottie Pippen-Dennis Rodman:

This triple threat only played three seasons together (1996-1998)but each season resulted in Chicago Bulls winning the title, giving the franchise it‘s second three-peat in eight seasons. Behind the nucleus of Jordan, Pippen and Rodman, the Bulls recorded the greatest win total in NBA history going 72-10 in the 1995-1996 season and a 15-3 playoff record during the post-season.

James, Wade and Bosh will definitely make the Heat one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference. However, it will take more than the individual talent alone of each of these players in order to win a title. If they are able to win multiple championships, this trio be may be the next to be added to the list of the greatest trios in NBA history.
