Andy Reid and Eagles have sudden change of heart and name Michael Vick starting QB.

Two days after Kevin Kolb was named starter for Sunday’s Jaguars game, Andy Reid threw a "Roy Halladay" curveball and has now named the starter Michael Vick. Initial thoughts were that this was due to a setback that Kolb had due to his concussion, but Andy Reid made it perfectly clear during his Tuesday press conference that this decision "has nothing to do with Kevin Kolb’s injury".

Andy Reid stated that this had nothing to do with Kolb’s play but had everything to do with the outstanding play of Michael Vick. "He sat in there as possibly the hottest QB in NFL at this time and deserves the opportunity to play." Reid also said, "This allows Kevin Kolb to continue his maturation process and become our franchise QB of the future." The question is that if Kevin Kolb is going to be your future franchise QB, then why would he not get his chance to finally start that career this season? Kolb, who waited patiently for his chance to start for three seasons and was finally given that chance to just have it taken away after one half of football. I think he has earned a bigger chance than that. Not to mention the offensive line being an absolute mess against the Packers’ swarming defense, and Andy Reid himself, not game-planning accordingly to help out his young first-year starter QB. The fact that the Eagles would not give Kolb at least a chance to win his job back against the Jacksonville Jaguars is pretty stunning.

There are rumors that players went up to management and wanted Vick to remain the starter. I would usually not believe this would have an effect on Andy Reid and the front office, but I would also have never thought that the Eagles would make this move. I can see why the players would want to stay with Vick at this time. Players want to have a great season each year. They do not want to wait for a young quarterback to get comfortable during the season, especially when you have a veteran pro-bowler playing at an elite level sitting on the bench. However, this should not have any effect on the Eagles’ management. Even with Michael Vick at the helm, the Eagles are a good team, but far from a great team. The offensive line needs to have an complete transformation for Philadelphia to be a contender. This is a group that let up six sacks against the Detroit Lions last Sunday, this whie having the quickest quarterback in NFL history. This is a big reason why this decision was made, even if Andy Reid and the coaches will not admit that. Kevin Kolb’s life may have been saved by keeping him off the field this season with this offensive line protecting him. Also, I am sure confidence went up after Reid and the front office watched the Cowboys, Redskins, and Giants all lose this weekend. The division is wide-open and the Eagles feel they have a good enough team to win it with Michael Vick. But unless Michael Vick is given a contract extension, this will only hurt the Eagles’ quarterback position for the future. Andy Reid created this NFL soap opera, now we must wait to watch the ending unfold.
