Fish oil is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to have numerous health benefits. Research studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids reduce the risk of heart diseases and help in overcoming mental disorders such as depression and schizophrenia. Fish oil of salmon, tuna, and sardines are rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids and are commercially available in the form of gelatinous capsules.

    Cardiovascular Benefits

Fish oil is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids: a type of polyunsaturated fatty acids that help in reducing cholesterol and reduce clotting of blood. They are instrumental in protecting the heart as they prevent the risk of cardiac arrhythmia. They reduce the level of triglycerides in blood, something that is responsible to trigger cardiovascular diseases when present in higher amounts.

    Cancer Prevention

Omega 3-fatty acids also provide protection against three types of cancer: breast, colon, and prostate. They prevent the mutation of normal cells into cancerous tumor and are instrumental in the death of cancer cells through apoptosis.

    Eye Health

Omega 3-fatty acids prevent macular degeneration of eyes: a condition that leads to blindness in people who are older than 50 years. It also helps in preventing the development of dry eye syndrome, a common ocular disease.

    Skin and Hair health

Omega-3 fatty acids are responsible for maintaining the youthful feel of skin as it stimulates the production of collagen and elastin fibres in skin and reduces the blemishes of the skin. The luster of hair is improved by omega-3 fatty acids. Proteins present in fish oil promote hair growth and arrest hair loss.

    Brain and nervous system

Omega-3 fatty acids help in improving concentration and memory. They improve the supply of blood to the brain and also regulate the endocrine and immune systems. DHA, an important omega-3 fatty acid in fish oil, regulates the level of serotonin: a neurotransmitter that helps in fighting depression. Research studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids help in fighting depression, bipolar disorders, and also reduce the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

    Bone and Connective Tissue

Omega-3 fatty acids are also responsible for maintaining the level of collagen and minerals responsible for healthy bones and joints.
